Gloria Steinem Helped Make the Radical Feel Ordinary
Gloria Steinem spent more than half a century fighting for women to have something that sounds remarkably simple today: an equal say in their own lives. Equal opportunity. Equal pay. A voice in politics, the workplace and the culture. The right to make choices about their own bodies and their own futures. A journalist, activist and co-founder of Ms. magazine, Steinem became one of the most recognizable voices of the modern women’s movement. She died September 2 at her home in New York City. She was 92.
We could fill pages with what Gloria Steinem accomplished. But maybe her contribution is easier to understand by looking at what came after her. Generations of women grew up expecting possibilities that women before them had been told weren’t theirs to expect. Some of those expectations feel so ordinary now that it’s easy to forget they were once considered radical. Gloria Steinem was one of the women who helped make them ordinary.
Her struggle was real but she was born for the challenge.
